Iran slams US human rights claims as ‘shameless hypocrisy’

In a post on his Twitter account on Saturday, Abbas Mousavi reacted to a tweet by US State Department Spokesperson Morgan Ortagus who criticized a new Iran’s human rights exhibition and alleged that the Islamic Republic as one of the world’s worst human rights abusers.

Seriously a US “Human Rights fair” would be great! Shooting passenger flights, discriminating blacks,bombing civilians in endless wars:Vietnam to Iraq, Yemen…let alone full support for the most brutal terrorist inhuman regimes in the region. “Shameless Hypocrisy ” at its core!

The Iranian spokesman said it would be great if the US held a “human rights fair,” enumerating several instances of Washington’s human rights violations.  

“Shooting passenger flights, discriminating blacks, bombing civilians in endless wars: Vietnam to Iraq, Yemen…let alone full support for the most brutal terrorist inhuman regimes in the region. Shameless hypocrisy at its core!” Mousavi added.

The exhibition of the achievements of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the field of human rights opened at the United Nations Office in Geneva on Monday.

The exhibition, held at the same time with the opening of the 34th session of the UPR (Universal Periodic Review) Working Group at the entrance hall of the conference, displays a number of cases of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s human rights progress and developments in posters and slides.

The US official’s remarks come as delegates to the United Nations Human Rights Council on Friday overwhelmingly praised Iran’s human rights performance at a periodic review of the Islamic Republic’s record.

“We commend the government’s commitment to promote and protect human rights, including ongoing efforts in improving education” and health, the Palestinian representative said.

“We highly commend the government of Iran for its dedicated efforts and its continuing progress in its promotion and protection of human rights for its people, particularly women, children and persons with disabilities, despite economic sanctions,” said the North Korean representative.

Also addressing the UN Human Rights Council, Iran’s envoy to the UN Human Rights Council condemned the US sanctions as a breach of the UN Charter and a major challenge to the Islamic Republic’s efforts to improve the human rights situation in the country.

Mohammad Javad Larijani said the Islamic Republic “has continuously worked for further promotion of human rights through adopting a constructive and collaborative approach.”

The UN Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Reviews take place every five years. Iran was one of 14 countries under review during the most recent session held in Geneva.
