Drones unveil US barbaric image

Press TV has conducted an interview with Mark Glenn, with the Crescent and Cross Solidarity Movement, about US President Barack Obama’s speech on the issue of drone strikes and also the Guantanamo Bay prison. What follows is an approximate transcription of the interview.

Press TV: I want to speak about both of the issues that President Obama discussed there. I want to start off with the drone strikes. He has called the use of drones a “just war”. How do you react?

Glenn: Well I am sure that if another country were using drones to kill Americans under the pretext that they had to protect themselves from American terrorism, and in the process of doing that for every one terrorist to get killed, they also managed to kill twenty or thirty or forty or fifty or even more innocent people in the process, I am sure that there would be a big question mark put next to that word “just” and as well as words such as “legal” and “successful” and these other words that the President used.

You know, listening to this speech, I couldn’t help but get the feeling that what the President was doing was, he sounded very desperate. He sounded like somebody who is out to make a case for something where no justifiable case can be made for it and clearly this is the case.

I think the entire world now has come to see in all of its ugliness the true barbaric nature of American and Zionist imperialism and there is no putting a pretty face back on this again.

So it is again, it is something mostly for the consumption of the American people but you know the rest of the world sees it for what it is which is just clear unadulterated mass murder of innocent people all over the globe and there is just no way to justify anything like this.

One day history will look back on this period and the United States and all of these other players who have been involved in this, they will never be able to get help from underneath the shadow that this is going to be, that is going to be put over them for all of the suffering and mayhem and oppression that they have dished out on millions of innocent people all over the world.

Press TV: I want to move on to the issue of Guantanamo Bay prison as well. Obama did touch upon that as well and did admit that this is a black stain on the United States image worldwide. Does that mean there is light at the end of the tunnel at least on this issue?

Glenn: I doubt it. I think that what he was doing there was again trying to gain some credibility. He is going to say on one hand, oh, Guantanamo is a really evil thing but the drone strikes are perfectly legal and just.

So I think this is just a lawyer’s tactic that they use where they will make a feint, they will seem to give in on a certain point in order to give justification to another point.

I do not necessarily see anything at Guantanamo Bay changing drastically anytime soon. I think that we are ruing to be in this thing for a while and I think that it is just going to get uglier and even more brutal as the days and years go by.
