Iran to hold new talks with P5+1 group

A top Iranian parliament (Majlis) official says the new round of negotiations between the Islamic Republic and the P5+1 Group will focus on Tehran’s proposals that include the fight against terror and drugs.

“The fresh round of talks between Iran and the P5+1 Group is to focus on Iran’s package of proposals,” said Allaeddin Boroujerdi, the chairman of the Majlis Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy, in an interview with ISNA on Wednesday.

The P5+1 Group refers to the group consisting of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, China, France, Britain, Russia, and the US, plus Germany that has been conducting negotiations with Iran over its nuclear activities.

“The package includes issues such as fighting against terrorism and drugs,” the senior Iranian lawmaker went on to say.

After the Islamic Republic presented its new package of proposals to the P5+1 Group, Tehran and the six major powers agreed to hold wide-ranging discussions on global issues as well as Iran’s rifts over its nuclear engagements with some Western countries that emerged on October 1 in Geneva.

Tehran faces pressure to halt its nuclear enrichment activities, as some Western countries, under pressure from the US and Israel, claim that Iran’s program is suspected of pursuing a weapons application.

Iran, however, has consistently denied seeking nuclear weapons and has been pushing for the complete elimination of all weapons of mass destruction across the globe, an effort that has been ignored by the major nuclear powers.
