Spokesman Raps EU for Ignoring US Violation of Rights of 80mln Iranians

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Mousavi blasted the European Parliament for issuing a "biased and unrealistic" resolution against Iran, and called on the EU states to stop ignoring the US violation of the Iranian people's human rights through economic sanctions.

“The biased, one-sides, unrealistic and disappointing resolution of the European Parliament against Iran is put to vote as the US continues violating the rights of over 80mln humans through practicing economic terrorism against Iran; an issue which is ignored by the European Parliament members,” Mousavi said on Monday.

He said Iran views respect for human rights as a religious and legal necessity, and is needless of other parties’ biased and opportunistic emphatic prescriptions.

Mousavi lashed out at Europe for its double-standard approach and instrumental use of human rights against other countries, and warned that such moves and resolutions by the EU are unconstructive and would be a hurdle to interaction with the EU.

The European Parliament on Thursday, September 19 adopted a resolution condemning the Islamic Republic’s human rights record, calling Tehran to end what it called as “suppression of women” in Iran.

The new resolution was endorsed by 608 votes in favor, seven against and 46 abstentions.

Iran has always criticized the western states for playing with such noble causes and values as human rights in pursuit of political objectives.

Last year, Secretary of Iran’s Human Rights Council Mohammad Javad Larijani lashed out at the West for its double-standard approach towards human rights issues in Iran and certain other regional and western states.

“Constructive talks on human rights issues at international level face three major obstacles. The first one is double-standards. The western states treat one group with one standard and another group with a different set of criteria,” Larijani said.

He explained that the US, France, Britain, Saudi Arabia and the UAE have hired a number of mercenaries to commit inhumane crimes in certain regional states but they keep mum about these human rights violations, and when a terrorist is executed in Iran, they launch propaganda against the country, and “this is a clear instance of the West’s double-standard behavior”.

Larijani added that another problem is that resolutions against Israel, Saudi Arabia, the US as the worst violator of human rights, Britain and France are rarely approved by the international bodies, but lots of resolutions have been approved against Iran which is the most successful country in the fight against terrorism.
