Iranian FM calls for probe into bomb attack in Beirut

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi has called for an investigation into Friday’s bomb attack in the Lebanese capital, Beirut.

The Iranian foreign minister made the remarks in a press conference in Tehran on Sunday.

Salehi stated that an investigation should be launched to find out who will benefit from this tragic incident.

He also offered condolences to the families of those killed in the attack, adding, “This explosion is a huge plot launched by the Zionists to complicate the conditions in the region.”

Iran’s foreign minister reiterated that the people and the parties in Lebanon will not allow anyone to sow discord in their country.

On Friday, a bomb exploded in Beirut’s eastern Ashrafiya district, and killed eight people and injured more than 78 others.

The explosion occurred near the headquarters of the Phalange, a Maronite Christian party. Several buildings were damaged and many cars were set on fire as a result of the blast.

The intelligence chief of Lebanon’s Internal Security Forces, General Wissam al-Hassan, was among those killed in the explosion. He had recently dismantled an Israeli spy cell in Lebanon.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati said the government was trying to identify the perpetrators and that they would be punished.
