Iranian Scientists Produce Herbal Compound against Drug-Resistant Cancers

Iranian scientists at Tabriz University produced a herbal composition, derived from turmeric plant, for treatment-resistant types of cancers.

“The nano formulation of curcumin herbal composition derived from turmeric plant was produced with a strong anti-cancer composition at Tabriz University,” Esmayeel Babayee, a faculty member of Tabriz University of Natural Sciences, told FNA on Monday.

He added that the composition has been tested against malignant and drug-resistant tumors of breast, ovary and stomach cancers, and the results have shown a meaningful killing of cancerous cells.

Curcumin is a natural polyphenol that is derived from the turmeric plant. Curcumin is widely used in food coloring, preservatives and condiments.

Curcumin possesses anti-tumor, anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory efficacy, as well as other pharmacological effects.

Emerging evidence indicates that curcumin alters microRNAs (miRNAs) and long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in various types of cancers. Both miRNAs and lncRNAs are non-coding RNAs that can epigenetically modulate the expression of multiple genes via post-transcriptional regulation.
