Iranians Celebrate Islamic Republic Day

Iranians throughout the country celebrated the Islamic Republic Day on Tuesday.
Today the Islamic Republic of Iran celebrated its 35th anniversary, and massive celebrations were held across the country.

In a two-day nationwide referendum held on 30 and 31 March 1979 and just a few months after the victory of the Islamic Revolution under the leadership of Imam Khomeini, 98.2% of Iranians showed that they wanted the monarchical system to change to an Islamic Republic.

As a result, on April 1, 1979 Iran was declared an Islamic Republic, and was given a new official name – the Islamic Republic of Iran.

This event was preceded by the Islamic revolution, which resulted in the overthrow of the last Shah of Iran – Mohammad Reza Pahlavi in February, 1979.

In a special statement then, the Supervisory Board of the country said that the event was “crucial for Iran and the entire world as it opened a new chapter in the history of our country and in the history of Islam.”

According to the Iranian calendar, the Islamic Republic day in the country is celebrated on Farvardin 12 (April 1).
