A father and his son have been found hiding in a jungle in central Vietnam, 40 years after they fled their village during the war with the US.

Ho Van Thanh left his village with his two-year-old son in 1973, after a landmine blast killed his wife and two of his sons.

The two men were found living in a dense area by people who ventured 40 kilometers into the jungle in search of firewood in Quang Ngai province’s Tay Tra district.

The father, who is now 82 years old, was reportedly quite ill and brought to a hospital while his son, Ho Van Lang, now 41, is adjusting to a new life.

For the past 4 decades, the two had been living in a treehouse and had no contact with the outside world.

They survived by cultivating forest vegetables, eating local fruits and hunting animals.

The pair could barely communicate, with the son knowing only a few words of the local dialect. His father has mostly forgotten how to speak, but knows a little of the region’s Cor language.

The Vietnam War was a Cold War-era military conflict in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia from November 1, 1955 to April 30, 1975 which claimed millions of military and civilian lives.

The US used an estimated 16 million tons of bombs and ammunition while allied with the former South Vietnamese government.
