Syrian Army Makes Huge Gains in Northern Aleppo: ISIS Loses More Territory

A handout picture released by the official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) shows Syrian Army soldiers walking around the government-controlled Hanano barracks in Aleppo, on April 17, 2014.

On Monday morning, the Syrian Arab Army’s 4th Mechanized Division – in coordination with the National Defense Forces (NDF) and the Al-Ba’ath Battalions – attacked the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) at a number of sites in northern Aleppo, targeting the territory located directly west of the recently captured Aleppo Infantry Academy.

The Syrian Armed Forces attacked ISIS at Jabal ‘Antar and Kafr Tunah from their positions at the village of Duwayr Al-Zeitoun on Sunday evening and resumed their assault the following morning; this resulted in the capture of the town and the small mountaintop from the terrorist group in northern Aleppo.

Following their success at Kafr Tunah and Jabal ‘Antar, the Syrian Armed Forces launched an assault on the Aleppo Free Trade Zone and the Aleppo Juvenile Detention Center from their positions at the village of Al-Muslimiyah, killing over 15 enemy combatants from the terrorist group, while also destroying two of their armored vehicles that were mounted with a 23mm anti-aircraft machine gun.

The capture of the aforementioned sites in northern Aleppo marks the first time since January of this year that the Syrian Armed Forces have made any gains in northern Aleppo; this is also the first time that the Syrian Armed Forces and ISIS have encountered one another since the Islamist rebels withdrew from the Aleppo Infantry Academy.
