Massive protests rock Kashmir Valley

Thousands of protesters in the Indian-controlled Kashmir have poured into the streets to protest the continuous killing of civilians.

Government forces fired warning shots on Thursday to disperse the protesters in Srinagar. Six people are reported to have been injured.

The Indian troops also fired tear gas and used batons during a pro-independence rally in the city, AP reported.

The protest comes a day after a teenager was killed in a fresh round of violence.

The government forces have responded by imposing curfews and restrictions on people’s movement.

Businesses centers, schools and government offices remained closed in the volatile Himalayan valley.

Kashmir has been the scene of pro-independence demonstrations on a nearly daily basis despite curfews.

The death of a teenage student on June 17 triggered the recent rallies.

Kashmir lies at the heart of more than 60 years of hostility between India and Pakistan. Both countries claim the region but have partial control over it.

Thousands of people have been killed in Indian-administered Kashmir since 1989.
