IRI pursuing Afghan issue

Islamic Republic has always put the Afghan issue top on its agenda of foreign relations, Spokesman of Foreign Ministry Ramin Mehmanparast told a weekly press conference Tuesday.

Asked at what level the Islamic Republic would participate in Bonn 2 conference, the spokesman said the issue was being reviewed in the foreign ministry.

Mr. Mehmanparast said IRI had excellent ties with Afghanistan, adding that he country’s security situation would leave its impact on the regional security and development.

The spokesman said in the past 30 years, the Islamic Republic has borne many costs for the purpose of resolution of the Afghan problems, including the hosting of about 3 million Afghan refugees and education of Afghan youth in the Iranian schools and universities.

The spokesman noted that the IRI will decide on its presence and level of presence in international meetings on Afghanistan in light of how much the Afghan authorities are granted role in such meetings and what initiatives are to be drawn up under their agendas.
