A man has been shot and arrested after a shooting on Capitol Hill, which temporarily put the Congress on lockdown.

The situation at the visitors center was contained on Monday and the shooter was said to have been shot and taken into custody.

Washington, DC, police said in a tweet that there was an “isolated incident at the US Capitol. There is no active threat to the public.”

With the Congress on recess, reporters, the staff, and tourists were told not to leave their offices.

“Due to police activity, Capitol Police have issued a shelter in place for the Capitol complex. Please stay in your designated area,” the Senate sergeant at arms said in a tweet.

A female bystander was injured by shrapnel during the incident and the suspect was taken to a hospital.

The White House was briefly shut down after the reports.

Elsewhere in the country, the New York Police Department confirmed that the cops were investigating a suspicious package in the Time Square.
