Kurdish forces drove the ISIL terrorists back from the Southern parts of the oil-rich city of Kirkuk in Northern Iraq on Monday.

The ISIL started attacks on the Southern parts of Kirkuk at midnight and continued the offensive until sunrise but the Pishmarga fighters repelled the aggression and hit a heavy blow at the terrorist group.

Tens of ISIL terrorists were killed and over a hundred were held captive by the Kurdish forces.

Also in another development, Iraq’s Kurdish Pishmarga forces, in a surprise attack on the ISIL positions in the early hours of Monday morning, recaptured a village from the terrorist group in South of Kirkuk, a local police chief said.

Kirkuk police Chief Brigadier General Sarhad Qadir told Rudaw that the Pishmarga attacked the ISIL positions in Mura Gawra in the dark of night, capturing the village and killing 14 militants.

Qadir added that the surrounding areas were also cleared of the ISIL control.

“The ISIL militants were totally defeated by this Pishmarga attack,” Qadir added.

According to Qadir, a group of the ISIL militants re-launched a counterattack against the Pishmarga, “but they were hit back and weren’t able to retake any territory,”

The Kurdish Pishmarga took control of Kirkuk last summer shortly after the ISIL captured Mosul from the Iraqi army. Since then they have fought some of their fiercest battles with the radical group in the Southern parts of the city.
