La Rinascita: Reform Promises Turned into Reality in Syria

The Italian Daily ‘ La Rinascita’ highlighted the ongoing reforms underway in Syria, with particular reference to the recent ratification of the Syrian Government of Party Law and Election Law.
In an article by Matteo Bernabei, the daily said that the ratification of the said Laws came in a little over a month time after President Bashar Al-Assad’s speech, therefore, the promises have turned into reality, despite the constant European and US pressure .

“‘It makes you smile that among the European countries that claim the right to dictate the agenda of reforms to the executive of Damascus there is also Italy. The governments in which they were left or right, the so-called Mattarellum of 1993 through the ‘Porcellum’ of Calderoli of 2005, in 18 years are not yet able to adopt a truly democratic electoral law,” said La Rinascita.

The Daily reviewed the main articles of the Laws ratified by the Syrian Government citing the proposed article in the near-to-be-ratified Information Law regarding the abolition of prison sentences for journalists, ‘ instead of sanctions that the government of Rome was ready to impose in Italy only two years ago” said the Daily.

The Daily wondered whether ”this time the fanatics of the armed uprising, or their American and European allies, will find a way to attack the government for having responded to the demands of the population.”
