Iran: ‘Successful’ election in Venezuela indicates democratic process ‘institutionalized’

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman has congratulated Venezuela on the “successful” holding of the presidential election that saw President Nicolas Maduro re-elected, amid “unjust” sanctions imposed on the Latin American country.

In a post on social media platform X on Monday, Nasser Kan’ani congratulated Venezuela’s nation, government and president on the “successful holding” of the presidential election.

“This election, which was held despite threats, and cruel and unjust sanctions imposed on Venezuela, and with the wide participation of people and under the supervision of hundreds of international observers from [different] countries, institutions and organizations, indicates the institutionalization of the democratic process in the country.”

Kan’ani reiterated the Islamic Republic’s support for Venezuela in advancing its plants to achieve national development, stressing Tehran’s keenness to strengthen bilateral ties with Caracas.

Elvis Amoroso, president of Venezuela’s CNE electoral body, said the 61-year-old Maduro won 51.2 percent of votes cast Sunday, securing a third six-year term in office.

Amoroso told reporters that opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia had obtained only 44.2 percent of votes.
