Standing together to make a change; ministers of the Non Aligned Movement or NAM countries have joined for their first meeting on science, technology and innovation. The ceremony was inaugurated by President Hassan Rouhani whose country currently holds the chairmanship of the NAM. Addressing the delegates Iran’s President criticized world powers for what he called a scientific discrimination against developing nations. He said that his country was sanctioned only for perusing its legal right to peaceful nuclear technology.

President Rouhani also proposed the establishment of the NAM center for scientific, technological and innovation cooperation in Tehran; a plan welcomed by the majority of members.

This is the first time that the 120 member group of nations holds a gathering aimed at forming a knowledge based economy that relies on the potentials of its members for a unified approach towards sustainable development.

NAM member states range from some of the richest to some of the world’s poorest countries. Iran believes that in order to face the world challenges in the forthcoming decades the Non Aligned Movement must provide the means for a stronger multilateral dialogue with a focus on science and technology cooperation among its members.
