July War Diary: South Lebanon Turned to Graveyard for Zionist Soldiers, Merkava

At least 18 Israeli soldiers and officers were killed on Thursday, August 10, 2006. Meanwhile, 15 Israeli Merkava tanks were destroyed in the clashes which took place in several fronts across the southern border towns, including Khiam valley and Markaba.

Also on that day, Resistance fighters chased an Israeli force in the southern town of Marjeyoun. The Israeli force fled to Marjeyoun Barracks, where 400 members of the Lebanese Joint Security Force were stationed. The commander of the Lebanese force Adnan Daoud ordered the Lebanese servicemen to receive the Israeli soldiers and offer them tea, in an incident the Lebanese people and national factions firmly slammed as treason.

Israeli helicopters struck the old light port in Ras Beirut, causing the destruction of its upper part. Israeli warplanes also attacked the civilian security convoy as it was getting out of Marjeyoun, killing or injuring dozens of civilians.

Late Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Al-Moallem urged the UN Security Council to adopt a resolution calling for immediate ceasefire in Lebanon.

The Zionist entity reportedly agreed on a US-French draft resolution which called for ceasefire, Israeli withdrawal and the deployment of international forces in south Lebanon.
