Syria, Kuwait discuss regional peace

The emir of Kuwait has wrapped up his two-day visit to Damascus, a move seen as a major step toward reconciliation between Syria and Egypt.

Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jabir al-Sabah met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, discussing ways to promote solidarity among nation to help tackle the challenged the Arab world is faced with.

The leaders also called for promoting bilateral cooperation, encouraging mutual investment and working for a united Arab front to work toward establishing peace in the region.

“The prince Kuwait started the effort for reconciliation during an economic summit in Kuwait and after that in other regional summits,” Syria’s Presidential Political and Media Advisor Bouthina Shaaban told reporters.

“These efforts need time to be fulfilled. Now the two sides are working hard to pushing a joint Arab action,” she added.

The Syrian and Kuwaiti heads of state also signed six agreements for their countries to cooperate in the areas of tourism, cultural exchanges, mutual investment protection and infrastructure constructions.

According to Syrian officials, Kuwaiti investments in Syria between 1991 and 2009 stood at 6 billion USD and involved 37 projects in industrial, agricultural and transportation sectors.

The Kuwaiti emir arrived in Damascus on Sunday on the second leg of as the second leg of his regional tour.

The emir, who has already visited Egypt, is scheduled to go to Jordan and Lebanon later.
