Libyan Revolutionaries march on Gaddafi hometown

Libyan revolutionary forces have made a strong push on the city of Sirt as they step up their assaults on last remaining strongholds of the fugitive Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

A spokesman for Libyan revolutionary forces, Ali Gliwan, said a unit has entered the outskirts of Gaddafi’s native city, located 400 kilometers (250 miles) east of the capital Tripoli, on Thursday, the Associated Press reported.

Gliwan said revolutionaries crossed a major highway overpass, known as al-Gharbiat, at the southwestern entrance of Sirt.

He added that revolutionary fighters have come under rocket fire as Gaddafi loyalists put up fierce resistance in the coastal city.

Gliwan said one revolutionary fighter was killed in the exchange of fire with supporters of fugitive Libyan dictator.

He also noted that Libyan revolutionary forces launched surprise attacks against Gaddafi loyalists from the western and southern sides, instead of the east.

Anti-Gaddafi forces have been trying to enter Gaddafi’s last remaining strongholds, including Sirt and Bani Walid, for two weeks.

The revolutionaries captured the capital, Tripoli and Gaddafi’s Bab al-Aziziyah compound last month.

Libya has been the scene of intense fighting between government troops and opposition fighters since the revolution seeking to topple Gaddafi began in mid-February.
