Syrian security forces have attacked armed groups in Damascus countryside, as the army continues to make gains on the ground.

According to an official source, Syrian forces killed a large number of foreign-backed militants in Barzeh neighborhood and near al-Manasher traffic circle in Joubar countryside on Wednesday.

Reports say that Syrian forces also carried out special operations against the foreign-backed militants in al-Thanawiya traffic circle in Harasta city, Tall Kurdi area, Deir Salman town, al-Qassimiyeh farms, and al-Mleiheh town, killing dozens of militants.

On Tuesday, the army regained control of almost all parts of the northern countryside of the city of Latakia. A large number of the militants were reportedly killed in the operation.

Syria has been gripped by turmoil for more than two years now.

According to reports, Western powers and their regional allies, especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.

The United Nations says more than 100,000 people have been killed and a total of 7.8 million displaced due to the foreign-backed militancy in Syria.

Over 1.8 million of the displaced Syrians are living in neighboring countries, mainly in Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon.
