Luhansk protesters snub Kiev amnesty

Pro-Russia protesters occupying government buildings in the eastern Ukrainian city of Luhansk have rejected an amnesty offer by the government.

According to AFP, Ukraine’s acting President Oleksandr Turchynov promised on Thursday not to prosecute the protesters if they evacuate before a Friday morning deadline.

However, protesters turned down the offer, saying they would only end the four-day siege if the government agreed to hold a referendum on the future of the region.

Alexander Gureyev, one of the protesters barricaded in the five-storey former KGB headquarters in Luhansk said “They offered amnesty, but there is no movement on a referendum for federalization.”

He added “We are not going to accept an amnesty without a referendum.”

The protesters also called on others to defy the pro-Western government in Kiev.
