Mansour: Lebanon supports political solution to crisis in Syria

Lebanon’s caretaker Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour renewed Lebanon’s support for resolving the crisis in Syria politically.

“The information so far confirms that the international conference on Syria, Geneva 2, will be held on as per schedule in Switzerland’s Montreux,” Mansour said in statements to Lebanese ‘al-Akhbar’ newspaper published Friday.

Mansour said that he sent the Ministry’s Director of Political Affairs, Charbel Wehbe, to a meeting scheduled to be held in Geneva at the level of Foreign Ministries’ directors of political affairs in preparation for holding Geneva 2 conference.

A tripartite meeting comprises diplomats from Russia, the United States and the United Nations is scheduled to be held today for resuming discussing issues related to the organization of Geneva 2.

Representatives of the rest UN Security Council’s permanent member states China, France and Britain and Syria’s neighboring countries including Lebanon will join the meeting later.

Mansour said that Lebanon will participate in today’s meeting as an active member with the UNSC five permanent members and Syria’s neighboring countries.

The Minister said that he provided Wehbi with Lebanon’s vision regarding Geneva2 according to three points related to the security due to the repercussions of the situation and crisis in Syria on Lebanon, Lebanon’s support to the political solution to the crisis and stopping the war and violence and the economic and social issue related to the displaced Syrians in Lebanon.

On Tuesday, the United Nations announced that the international conference on Syria, Geneva 2 will be held in Switzerland’s Montreux next January 22 .
