Pro-Taliban militants have killed a NATO supply truck driver in Pakistan’s troubled southwestern province of Balochistan.

Local officials say two gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on the truck in Khuzdar District of the volatile province on Wednesday.

“The driver was killed on the spot,” media outlets quoted a regional police officer as saying.

At least two other people were injured in the deadly incident, who were taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.

Security sources said the attackers managed to flee the scene before policemen cordoned off the area.

Hundreds of NATO tankers and containers have been destroyed in different parts of Pakistan over the past few years.

Pro-Taliban militants often claim responsibility for such attacks, saying that the assaults are in retaliation for the US killer drone strikes on Pakistan’s tribal regions.

Despite frequent attacks on NATO supply convoys, the US military has not stopped its drone attacks on the Pakistani territory.

Washington claims the airstrikes target militants. However, figures show the attacks have led to the deaths of hundreds of civilians in Pakistan over the past few years.

Elsewhere in northwestern city of Peshawar, law enforcement agencies arrested at least 98 terror suspects during a clean-up operation across the militancy-wracked city.

Peshawar has experienced a fresh spate of violence and militancy over the past few months. Militant attacks and bomb explosions have killed hundreds of people in the city so far this year.
