Military detains Muslim Brotherhood leader in Egypt

mohamed-badie-freres-musulmans-mEgyptian Muslim Brotherhood’s Supreme Leader Mohammed Badie has been arrested less than a day after the military removed President Mohamed Morsi from power, security officials say.

Badie was arrested on Thursday by Egyptian military police in a resort village in the western city of Marsa Matrouh, the officials said.

The arrest was made at the request of public prosecutor “for inciting the killing of protesters,” they added.

The prosecutor’s office is to begin questioning members of the Brotherhood, including the ousted president Morsi, for “insulting the judiciary”.

Other Brotherhood leaders, including Saad al-Katatni, Mohammed al-Beltagui, Gamal Gibril and Taher Abdel Mohsen, will be also interrogated on the same charges.

Morsi, removed from office late Wednesday, is reportedly held “preventively” by the military. An army official has said that Morsi might face formal charges over accusations made by his opponents.

State media also reported that arrest warrants have been issued for a total of 300 Brotherhood officials.

The Brotherhood announced that it would boycott the new political process in the country and also called on its supporters to detach themselves from the recent development.

“We declare our uncompromising rejection of the military coup staged against the elected president and the will of the nation and refuse to participate in any activist with the usurping authorities,” the group said in a statement read by mufti Abdel-Rahman el-Barr to the supporters of Morsi in Cairo.
