A US policeman in the state of Texas has shot and killed a student suspected of vandalism, amid more deadly gun violence in the country.

According to president of the University of North Texas (UNT), the officer shot dead the axe-wielding student suspected of knocking out car windows early on Sunday.

No one else was hurt.

The dead young man was later identified by the Tarrant County medical examiner as Ryan McMillan, 21, who died at a hospital.

“This is a tragic event that saddens us as a university community,” said the school president. “We offer our condolences to the individuals, their families and all involved.”

UNT is located in Denton, Texas, near Dallas and has about 37,000 students, according to its website.
