Afghan security officials say at least one civilian has been killed and thirteen others injured in a powerful explosion close to the Hamid Karzai International Airport in the Afghan capital city of Kabul.

The explosion took place at about 8 a.m. local time (0330 GMT) on Monday.

Sediq Sediqqi, a spokesman for the Afghan Interior Ministry, said a bomber detonated his vehicle laden with explosives in the Hawa Shinasi area of Kabul, which lies adjacent to the airport.

He added that one civilian was killed and thirteen others were wounded in the attack.

The Taliban militant group later claimed responsibility for the act of violence, saying that their target was a convoy of foreign troops, which apparently wasn’t harmed in the explosion.
