Morsi supporters hold fresh rallies across Egypt

Tens of thousands of supporters of the overthrown president Mohamed Morsi have staged fresh rallies across Egypt to demand his reinstatement.

Large crowds of protesters gathered on Friday outside the Raba’a al-Adawiya Mosque in Nasr City, a Cairo suburb and a stronghold of the ousted president.

Morsi’s supporters in their thousands also massed in other parts of the capital on Friday evening. They have dubbed Friday’s demonstrations as “Breaking the Coup”.

Elsewhere in Alexandria and Giza, the second and third largest cities, protests were held in support of Morsi.

Morsi’s opponents were also to gather in Cairo’s landmark Liberation Square and outside the presidential palace.

Morsi was arrested by the Egyptian military on July 3, and has not been heard of ever since. Meanwhile, the Egyptian army has also arrested a number of Morsi’s top aides and issued arrest warrants for hundreds of Muslim Brotherhood members and leaders.

Tension has intensified since the Egyptian army overthrew Morsi, suspended the constitution, dissolved the parliament on July 3 and declared the chief justice of Egypt’s Supreme Constitutional Court, Adly Mansour, as interim president the following day.

Dozens of people have since been killed in the wave of violent clashes between Morsi supporters, his opponents and security forces.
