Most Americans say US on wrong track

A new opinion poll has revealed that the majority of Americans believe their country is moving on the wrong track.

According to the Reuters/Ipsos poll, a staggering 63 percent of American voters are dissatisfied with the current trend of affairs in their country, a three percent rise since June.

The increasing unemployment rates and a diminishing faith in the resolution of Washington’s budget stalemate have led the Americans to develop a bleak outlook of the future.

This comes as US President Barack Obama’s approval rating has also witnessed a slight one percentage point drop from June to reach 49 percent. His approval rating among the independents, however, witnessed a sharper fall to 39 percent from 44 percent.

Obama’s popularity could yet suffer further blows, should he not succeed in creating jobs and prove incapable of solving problems, Ipsos pollster Julie Clark said.

“If those things don’t happen, Obama will be in for a real challenge in getting re-elected next year,” Clark added.

The US congressional representatives have currently locked horns over raising the country’s debt ceiling.

While the Democrats are calling for an increase in tax revenue and an end to the tax cuts made by former President George Bush’s administration for the wealthier Americans, the Republicans are against any tax increase and advocate a reduction of civil services such as Social Security and Medicare.

If the US lawmakers fail to forge a deficit-reduction deal by August 2, a debt default will ensue, possibly plunging the US into yet another recession.
