NATO soldier killed in Afghanistan

A NATO soldier has been killed in an explosion that hit an Afghan Army base in Capital Kabul, in a training session that involved heavy weapons.

The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said in a Monday statement the soldier “died today following an explosion at an Afghan National Army facility in Kabul.”

Several other international and two Afghan soldiers were wounded in the incident.

No detail of the blast was revealed. However, AFP quoted an Afghan army official on condition of anonymity that a mortar fuse blew up during a training exercise.

The latest death brings to 166 the number of foreign soldiers killed in Afghanistan in 2010.

The 126,000-strong International force currently deployed in Afghanistan is to peak at 150,000 by August in line with US President Barack Obama’s call for troop surge.

Obama has set new tactics to change the pace of nine years of war in the country.
