Peru has declared an environmental emergency state in a remote area of the Amazon region due to high levels of mercury contamination caused by illegal gold mining.

Peruvian President Ollanta Humala declared the 60-day emergency state in 11 districts of the Madre de Dios region near the country’s southeastern border with Brazil, Environment Minister Manuel Pulgar-Vidal announced on Monday.

“Forty-one percent of the population of Madre de Dios is exposed to mercury pollution,” Pulgar-Vidal said in a news conference.

As part of the emergency, the government would provide uncontaminated fish to residents in Madre de Dios and send hospital boats to help treat the affected people there.

The authorities would also set up mobile health clinics and monitoring centers and implement educational campaigns, Pulgar-Vidal said.

Studies found that the residents of Madre de Dios have dangerous levels of the toxic element in their body. Mercury is also found in rivers and fish.

People from the Harakmbut indigenous group, who have particularly been affected, have mercury levels six times the suggested level, said Deputy Health Minister Percy Minaya.
