Grand Mufti: Syria gains momentum due to people’s steadfastness

In a lecture titled “The Future of Syria,” held in the auditorium of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Aleppo, Shaykh Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun, the Grand Mufti of Syria, said “Throughout history, Levant was the cradle of the divine religions and their various laws.”

“Islam is a religion that is not based on sect, tribe or ethnicity but rather it is a religion of tolerance, love and brotherhood,” stressed the Syrian Sunni cleric adding, “Islam is based on doctrine and law and commitment to Islam is based on free will and there is no compulsion in religion but the law is a legal and political system which seeks to serve man in his faith, culture and freedom.”

Shaykh Hassoun praised the steadfastness of the people of Aleppo in the face of terrorism, saying, “The Syrian people are a model of steadfastness and patience in the face of the trials and tribulations of the battle against the forces of evil and terrorism and in their support for the heroes of the Syrian Arab Army.”

He added,”today, the people of Aleppo are more insistent on renewing their lives through reconstruction, education and repairing that which has been destroyed by the hands of the forces of evil and aggression.”

According to Rasa, the Grand Mufti of Syria called on the students of the University of Aleppo to continue their efforts and to participate in the process of building and reconstruction by persevering on the path of acquiring knowledge and to equip themselves with these two armaments to rebuild society, defend the country’s territory and fight extremist thoughts and anti-Islamic ideology.

Shaykh Hassoun emphasized, “the need to build bridges of love and familiarity between the different sectors of society through moderate and tolerant religious discourse and the rebuilding of a healthy human society in order to confront the ideology that is intended to sabotage mankind’s mind, reason and body.”
