Foreign intervention intensifying tension in Egypt

Iranian MP Alaeddin Boroujerdi has condemned the Egyptian military’s massacre of civilians, describing it as a foreign-backed scenario devised to undermine the democratic process of the country
In an interview with Iran’s Majlis news agency (ICANA) on Sunday, Boroujerdi, who is the chairman of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said, “The United States and the Zionists are using all their resources to sabotage the achievements of the Islamic Awakening movement in the Middle East.”

“The Egyptian army should view followers of former president Mohammed Morsi as part of its own people and stop killing them because it may lead to a civil war in the country.”

“It is the duty of the Muslim population of Egypt to foil the conspiracies which are devised by foreign elements to hijack their revolution,” he added.

Commenting on Iran’s position on the developments in Egypt, Boroujerdi said, “Iran is ready to use all its diplomatic capacity to help restore calm in Egypt but is opposed to any type of foreign intervention.”

Egypt has been gripped by a bloody violence since Morsi’s ouster by the army in early July.

Over 800 people, most of them pro-Morsi protesters, have been killed since Wednesday during nationwide rallies across the Arab country. Thousands of supporters of Muslim Brotherhood have been arrested by security forces over the past few days.
