Powerful bomb blast kills 50 in Pakistan

At least 50 people have been killed and seventy others injured when a bomb went off inside a mosque during a Friday prayer in northwestern Pakistan.

“The death toll has risen to 50. It could rise further,” Reuters quoted Shahid Ullah, a senior provincial government official, as saying on Friday.

The explosion took place in Darra Adam Khel in Kohat area, near the city of Peshawar.

“There were more than 100 people inside the mosque. The roof of its main hall collapsed after the blast. Several people are buried under the debris,” he further explained.

No group or person has yet claimed responsibility for the bombing.

Rescue teams are continuing their efforts to save the people trapped inside the mosque.

Earlier in October, five people were killed and more than 22 others injured when a blast hit a mosque in the city of Peshawar.

The explosion took place when worshippers were leaving the mosque after the Friday prayers. Officials say the blast was caused by an improvised-explosive device.

Northwest regions of Pakistan have been the target of bomb attacks at mosques and other public places over the past few years.
