Official: Tehran, New Delhi Support Peaceful Solution to Syrian Crisis

A senior Iranian diplomat underscored Iran and India share views on developments in Syria, and stated that the two countries are against military intervention in the Arab state and want a peaceful end to the Syrian crisis.

“The views of Iranian and Indian officials are similar and given India’s role in the region, they are also eager to see the Syrian issue resolved peacefully. We regularly consult with our Indian friends,” Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Mohammad Mehdi Akhoundzadeh said on Friday.

He called for cooperation between Iran and India within the framework of the Non-Aligned Movement to restore peace and stability in Syria.

He further stated that the international community along with regional nations welcome the establishment of peace through negotiations and want an immediate cessation of foreign aid to terrorists seeking to disrupt security and order in the region.

Tehran has recently doubled its efforts to settle the problems in Syria which has been experiencing unrest since March 2011 with organized attacks by well-armed gangs against Syrian police forces and border guards being reported across the country.

Hundreds of people, including members of the security forces, have been killed, when some protest rallies turned into armed clashes.

The government blames outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups for the deaths, stressing that the unrest is being orchestrated from abroad.

In October 2011, calm was eventually restored in the Arab state after President Assad started a reform initiative in the country, but Israel, the US and its Arab allies are seeking hard to bring the country into chaos through any possible means. Tel Aviv, Washington and some Arab capitals have been staging various plots in the hope of increasing unrests in Syria.
