Monday, June 06, 2016 is the first of the month of Ramadan 1437 H.

The Juristic Office at the Institution of the late Religious Authority, His Eminence, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah (ra) issued a statement in which it declared that Monday, June 06, 2016 is the first of the month of Ramadan 1437 H., according to the jurisprudential opinion of the late Religious Authority, His Eminence, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah (ra).

Following is the text of the statement:

The new crescent (central conjunction) for the month of Ramadan 1437 H. will be born on Sunday, June 5, 2016 A.D. at 03:00 a.m. (GMT) that is, at 06:00 a.m. Beirut time. The crescent stays for 17 minutes after sunset, for the sun sets at 19:47, while the crescent sets at 20:04. This means that the crescent will have been born for 13 hours and 48 minutes and its height above the horizon of Beirut city would be at 03°:05′:31″. Moreover, the angular separation between the moon and the sun is around 4 degrees and 8 minutes, and the crescent’s thickness is 00°:00′:13″ and its lighting ratio is 00.67 %. Moreover, it would be 365195,20 km away from earth.

Thus, according to these characteristics, the crescent can be sighted either by the naked eye or by the aid of telescopes as shown in the diagram below. Therefore, Monday, June 06, 2016 A.D. will be the first day of the month of Ramadan for the eastern and western hemispheres, according to the opinion of His Eminence, the late Religious Authority, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah (ra).
