One student killed in Cairo University clashes

injured in clashes that erupted between student protesters and army supporters at Cairo University.

The violence broke out on Thursday in the university’s main campus.

In a separate incident, a group of students attacked the gates of the administrative office of the capital’s Ain Shams University.

The new wave of unrest comes after a two-day constitutional referendum that was hoped to end the deadly clashes across the country.

Officials say 38 percent of Egyptians voted to back a draft charter that would pave the way for a new presidential election later in the year.

The Anti-Coup Alliance, a coalition led by the Muslim Brotherhood, rejected the referendum and pledged to stage further protests against the army-installed interim government.

Egypt has been experiencing anti-governmnet protests on an almost daily basis since the country’s military ousted the country’s first democratically elected president, Mohamed Morsi.

The army then suspended the constitution, dissolved the parliament, and appointed the head of the Supreme Constitutional Court, Adly Mahmoud Mansour, as the interim president.

On Tuesday, clashes between Morsi supporters and their opponents and police killed at least nine people and around 444 people were arrested for holding protests on the first day of the constitutional vote.

The draft charter bans the formation of religious political parties. It also allows prosecution of civilians in military courts and also empowers the army to appoint the defense minister and keep its budget beyond any civilian scrutiny.

If approved, the new charter will replace the current constitution passed under the Morsi administration in December 2012.
