Enmity toward Iran fundamental for US

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad describes US enmity towards Iran as “fundamental,” saying Washington fears the growing influence of Tehran.

In a televised interview in southern Iran, Ahmadinejad said the people in the US and Europe have become “disappointed with their leaders and now see Iran as their only hope.”

Washington and Tehran have had no diplomatic relations since the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran.

In addition to three rounds of UN sanctions, the US has imposed its own trade embargoes on firms for doing business with Iran in a bid to bring Tehran’s nuclear program to a halt.

Ahmadinejad said, “The US is fundamentally against Iran… The enemies fear the history and influence of the Iranian nation while Iran only wants to interact with the world.”

Ahmadinejad stressed that US influence in the world was waning while Iran was an “emerging power.”

The US and its Western allies accuse Iran of using its nuclear program as a cover for developing atomic weapons.

Tehran has categorically denied the allegations, saying as a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), it has the right to peaceful nuclear technology.
