US has no excuse to attack Iran

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has ruled out the likelihood of an attack on Iran, stressing that the US would have no reason for such a move.

“First of all, there is no reason or evidence to support a conflict with Iran,” Ahmadinejad said at a press conference in Doha on Sunday. “Secondly, the US is incapable of taking action against Iran.”

The president went on to note that certain powers are seeking to launch fresh wars in the Middle East but stressed the Iranian military would be able to effectively counter any attacks, IRNA reported.

“Whenever the Zionist regime [of Israel], the US, and the others have the opportunity to hit countries in the [Middle East] region, they will not wait on anyone’s permission,” he added.

“The important fact is that they cannot deal a blow to the Iranian nation,” Ahmadinejad said.

The remarks were made following a meeting with Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani in Doha, where both officials stressed on the need to expand bilateral ties amid efforts to boost Mideast security.

While Israel has in the past few years repeatedly threatened to strike Iran’s nuclear facilities over accusations that Tehran is following a military nuclear program, Washington’s latest threat of war was voiced last month by Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen.

Mullen said the US military was prepared to attack Iran, if that would stop Tehran from making a “bomb.”

Iranian officials have dismissed the threats but warned that any military strike against Iran would have consequences that would spread beyond the Middle East.

Tehran has repeatedly rejected such Western allegations, insisting that as a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, it is only after the civilian and peaceful applications of nuclear technology.
