Pro-Hezbollah group member shot in N Lebanon

Unknown gunmen have shot a member of the pro-Hezbollah group, the Islamic Action front, in Lebanon’s northern city of Tripoli, Press TV reports.

Sheikh Saadeddine Ghiyyeh was shot by masked gunmen in front of his home on Tuesday.

According to the Daily Star, Ghiyyeh was critically wounded in the head, neck and chest.

“He is alive but in a critical condition,” the Daily Star quoted a medical source at Sayidet al-Hayat Hospital in Zghorta as saying.

There were initially conflicting reports over his life, some reports said he was killed, while others said he was severely injured.

The Islamic Action front is considered close to the resistance movement Hezbollah and the Syrian government.

Tensions are running high in Tripoli, a city of nearly 200,000 people and Lebanon’s second largest, since the beginning of unrest in the neighboring Syria.

The city has witnessed deadly clashes between supporters and opponents of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad over the past two years.
