At least one person has been killed and another one injured in an explosion in the Sabiha Gökçen International Airport in Turkey’s most populous city of Istanbul.

The explosion took place near an aircraft in the apron of the airport, located 35 kilometers (22 miles) southeast of downtown Istanbul, at 2.15 a.m. local time (0015 GMT) on Wednesday, state-run Anadolu news agency reported.

Airport cleaner, Zehra Yamac, 30, died of head wounds hours after the explosion at the airport, which is located on the Asian side of Istanbul, CNN-Turk and NTV television reported.

Security forces have launched an investigation into the cause of the explosion.

Police armed with rifles and protective vests have imposed tight security at entrances to Sabiha Gökçen airport, and are searching all vehicles in the area.

The Istanbul police department has dismissed the allegation that a “mortar attack” caused the explosion.

Sabiha Gökçen International Airport’s operator announced in a brief statement that plane takeoffs and landings at the airport are going as planned.
