Terrorist groups must be disarmed in Syria: Larijani

Iran’s Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani warns against terrorist attacks in Syria, urging the full implementation of a ceasefire plan and the disarming of armed groups in the Arab country.

“[Joint UN-Arab League envoy to Syria] Kofi Annan should act in line with his peace plan on disarming terrorist groups in Syria because military forces have left the conflict cities and they (terrorist groups) should also honor their commitments,” Larijani told reporters on Monday.

In response to a question about a possible agreement between Western countries and the Syrian government within the framework of Annan’s six-point peace plan, he said, “We cannot pass judgment regarding the issue because certain regional and Western countries pursue an aggressive attitude towards Syria.”

The Majlis speaker warned that if the Anan plan is not implemented terrorist events and explosions would continue in Syria.

Despite a ceasefire that took effect in Syria on April 12 and the presence of UN observers tasked with monitoring the truce plan, the country has been the scene of bomb attacks in recent days.

The ceasefire was part of a six-point peace plan proposed by UN-Arab League envoy Annan in March.

The first group of UN observers arrived in Damascus on April 15. The observers were approved for the mission according to the UN Security Council Resolution 2042 passed on April 14.

On April 21, the Security Council met and unanimously voted on Resolution 2043 to send a mission of 300 observers to Syria.
