Hezbollah candidates win municipal elections

Participation of nearly 60 percent of the electorate and victory of Hezbollah and Amal Movement’s candidates in the first round of voting in municipal elections of Lebanon were the most important results of the event.

Lebanon’s Interior Minister Ziad Baroud said at a press conference that overall Mount Lebanon voter turnout was approximately 59 %.

The election was held in a calm situation without any security event or violation, he said.

All Hezbollah’s candidates in four regions of Ghobeiry, Haret Hreik, Burj al-Barajneh and Shayah could gain victory and in al Hadath, candidates of the Michel Aoun party could defeat candidates of US-backed March 14 group.

The municipal polls are held every six years in Lebanon.
