Tunisia backs bids to boost unity among Muslims: Marzouki

fathi20130622084143470Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki says his country supports any effort aimed at creating unity and promoting convergence among Muslim nations.

Marzouki made the remark in a meeting with Secretary General of the World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought in Iran Grand Ayatollah Mohsen Araki in the Tunisian capital, Tunis, on Friday.

The Tunisian president praised the forum’s measures to reinforce unity among Muslims across the world and counter plots aimed at causing sectarian and religious rifts, particularly at the current sensitive juncture.

He stressed the importance of bolstering Tehran-Tunis relations and urged “serious interaction” between the two countries to strengthen ties.

Marzouki also expressed his congratulations on the recent presidential election in Iran.

Hassan Rohani emerged victorious in the presidential election of June 14 – which was marked by a high voter turnout – winning 50.7 percent of a total of 36,704,156 ballots counted.

The voter turnout in the election was 72.7 percent, according to Iran’s Interior Ministry.

Nearly 50.5 million Iranians, including more than 1.6 million first-time voters, were eligible to participate in the presidential, and City and Village Islamic Council elections.

In a telephone conversation with Iran’s President-elect on Wednesday, the Tunisian president congratulated Rohani on his election victory and wished him success.

Marzouki stated that his country has pinned its hopes on Iran’s president-elect to solve the problems that the region and the Muslim world are currently grappling with, including the conflict in Syria.
