The Argentine Congress held a special session to discuss the US intervention in the region following an executive order from the US President Barack Obama. The executive order declares Venezuela a security threat and imposes unilateral sanctions against seven top officials of the Caribbean country.

The session was attended by some of the highest ranking diplomats of Latin America who also took part in the debate.

The Ambassador of Venezuela to Argentina addressed the Parliament about the measures President Nicolas Maduro is adopting in Caracas against the US meddling. He also briefed the lawmakers on the political situation in Venezuela.

Argentine lawmakers said they believed the sanctions aim to destabilize Venezuela and are retaliation against the independent foreign policy adopted by Caracas.

Following the US President decision to declare Venezuela a national security threat, all the South American Foreign Ministers held an extraordinary meeting in Ecuador where they approved a joint resolution which blasts the US aggression toward Venezuela and calls on Washington to revoke what the ministers dubbed as an imperialist executive order.

At the end of the session, the Argentine lawmakers issued a joint resolution which expresses their country’s support for Venezuela and urges the US to abide by the international law.
