Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Qatari counterpart Khalid bin Mohammad al-Attiyah have met in New York to discuss the expansion of Tehran-Doha ties and the developments in the Middle East.

During the Thursday meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the 68th annual session of the UN General Assembly, Zarif stressed the significance of bilateral ties between Tehran and Doha.
The Iranian minister further underscored the Islamic Republic’s goodwill in its relations with regional and neighboring countries.
Attiyah, for his part, expressed his country’s willingness to cooperate with Tehran and take a new step forward in the relations between the two nations.
The two ministers also exchanged views on the latest regional developments, including the deadly crisis in Syria, underlining the significance of stability, security, and progress in the region.
As for the crisis in Syria, Zarif said, “What is taking place in Syria is a tragedy for the region and the Islamic world and we hope that we can help resolve this crisis through peaceful ways and political dialogue.”
Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and a total of 7.8 million of others displaced since the beginning of the conflict in the Arab country.
