Press TV has conducted an interview with Colin Cavell, author & lecturer from West Virginia, to discuss the United Nations’ demand for humanitarian aid delivery to Yemen.

The following is a rough transcription of the interview.

Press TV: Now were you sitting in the United States yourself, Mr. Cavell, I imagine that the media has not yet discussing the humanitarian situation in Yemen as much, because there hasn’t been much uproar even though this news about 21 million Yemenis needing aid, has been out for awhile.

Cavell: Because the United States has allied with Saudi Arabia in this attack on Yemen, the news here is silent just as it is silent on Bahrain. It’s also silent on the atrocities committed in Yemen. The naval and aerial blockade that Saudi Arabia is imposing on the country and creating a famine for 21 million Yemenis.

Press TV: How much longer though can the silence be accepted from the West especially, which can of course greatly influence the situation?

Cavell: Well, the United States’ media does what it will do. What’s important is that the Yemeni people continue to struggle and to fight against this outside interference from Saudi Arabia just as the Bahrainis have to fight the outside interference from Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia is the hegemon in the region and they’re trying to fight back this movement for democracy. The people want self-rule in Bahrain, they want self-rule in Yemen, they want self-rule in the entire region, but Saudi Arabia monarchy there the dictatorship is trying to prevent that. And the United States is in league with this dictatorial regime and thus remains silent on atrocity’s being committed.

Press TV: And do you think finally, Mr. Cavell, this call by the United Nations to allow these sorts of supplies in, will make a difference?

Cavell: Well, at least it brings light to the fact that this blockade, this naval blockade and this aerial blockade are occurring right now and that 21 million people are subject to famine, hospitals are going without electricity, secured businesses do not have any food or perishables. So, it is affecting the entire population. And so, this calls attention to the world of what’s going on in Yemen and the outside interference of Saudi Arabia and creating this catastrophic situation.
