Clashes have broken out between Israeli forces and Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, a day after Israeli soldiers killed a Palestinian minister in the area.

On Thursday, scores of Palestinians clashed with Israeli forces in al-Khalil (Hebron) where the Palestinians threw rocks at the Israelis.

There have been no reports of injuries or arrests yet.

The Israeli regime has beefed up its military forces in the area to suppress any protest by Palestinians over the brutal killing of senior Palestinian official Ziad Abu Ein, 55, by Israeli troops.

A funeral was also held for the Palestinian minister in Ramallah. Thousands of Palestinians participated in the funeral.

Palestinians and Israelis released conflicting reports over the results of an autopsy of Abu Ain’s body.

A top Palestinian official, Hussein al-Sheikh, says the examination of Ain’s body showed that had died from “being struck, inhaling tear gas and a delay in providing
medical attention.”

Israeli officials, however, say the Palestinian’s death was due to a “heart attack.”

“His death was caused by a coronary occlusion, brought on by stress. The stress may have been brought on by him being grabbed by the neck,” an Israeli medical source familiar with the autopsy results said.

Abu Ein, who was a minister in the Palestinian Authority, lost his life as he participated in a march by some 300 Palestinians who planned to plant olive trees as a symbolic act of protest against Israeli settlements.

According to Palestinian security sources, Abu Ein, who was in charge of the issue of Israeli settlements within the Palestinian Authority, died after Israeli soldiers hit him with the butts of their weapons and their helmets during the rally in the village of Turmusayya.

The president of the Palestinian national unity government Mahmud Abbas condemned “the brutal assault that led to the martyrdom” of Abu Ein, calling it “a barbaric act that cannot be tolerated or accepted.”

Tensions have been running high in the past few weeks in the West Bank and East al-Quds (Jerusalem) over the desecration of the al-Aqsa Mosque by Israeli troops.
