Senior MP Calls for Ulemmas’ Mediation in Egypt’s Crisis

A prominent Iranian legislator called for halt in bloodshed and violence in Egypt through the help and mediation of the Muslim Ulemmas (religious scholars) and dignitaries of the Arab country.
“ … we expect Egypt’s Ulemmas and dignitaries to prevent this massive bloodshed through adopting (appropriate) stances accordingly,” Vice-Chairman of the parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Mansour Haqiqatpour told FNA on Saturday.

He underlined that the Islamic Republic openly condemns the brutal killings in Egypt and does not consider the army’s move to be within a democratic framework.

“We believe that Egypt’s problems can be resolved according to law and democracy, while there is no need for the presence of the Zionist regime and the US because they, instead of resolving the crisis in that country, are after fueling hatred and anger among different political groups in Egypt,” he added.

Since July 3, tension has intensified in Egypt when the Egyptian army removed former President Mohamed Mursi from power, suspended the constitution and dissolved the parliament.

On Wednesday, the Egyptian security forces moved into clear out two camps set up by Mursi’s supporters – one near the Rabaah al-Adawiya Mosque in Nasr City and a smaller one in al-Nahda Square in Giza.

Egypt’s Health Ministry says at least 525 people were killed and 3,600 injured in the violence. The Egyptian Interior Ministry also said 43 policemen were among the dead.

However, the Muslim Brotherhood put the death toll far higher, saying more than 2,000 people had died in the police crackdown.
