‘Gaddafi fate lesson to regional tyrants’

An Iranian lawmaker says the fall of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi’s last bastion and the detention of two of his sons should serve as a lesson to regional authoritarian regimes.

Member of Iran’s Majlis (parliament) Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy Mohammad Karamirad told ISNA on Monday that Gaddafi chose to kill his own people in order to stay in power for a while and “this resulted in the ruthless killing of civilians and the loss of his children.”

He added that the fall of the Gaddafi regime serves as a bitter lesson to dictators in regional Arab countries.

The Iranian lawmaker pointed out that former Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak and the embattled Libyan ruler served the interests of arrogant powers against their own nations.

He expressed hope that Libyans can determine their own fate without the interference of other countries.

On Monday, tens of thousands of people took to the streets across Libya to celebrate the arrest of Saif al-Islam and Mohammed, two of Gaddafi’s son, by opposition fighters.

Libyan fighters, who managed to reach the highly symbolic Green Square in the center of Tripoli early on Monday, also waved the red, black and green flag of anti-regime forces and danced in obvious joy.

The revolutionary forces swept into the heart of Tripoli early Monday and seized the control of most of Libya’s capital city without facing significant resistance from regime forces.

Libya has been the scene of intense fighting between regime troops and fighters since a revolution seeking to topple Gaddafi began in mid-February.
