Iran renews call for UN restructure

Iran’s ambassador to the UN has called for reforms in the international body especially in the UN Security Council in order to face new global challenges.

To face the new world today, developing countries need to pool their resources to create a new system of policy-making at the international level, Mohammad Khazaee told the 34th annual meeting of the foreign ministers of the member states of the Group of 77 in New York.

“Reforms in the current structure of the UN and the Security Council in particular as well as financial bodies such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank are among the necessities,” he added.

Iran has on several occasions called for a transformation within the structure of the United Nations based on equal rights for all nations.

Khazaee called the financial crisis a serious threat to development, stability and security and urged enhanced cooperation among G-77 member states to deal with world challenges.

Established in 1964 with 77 members, the G-77 now has 130 members and is the largest UN intergovernmental organization of developing countries. It discusses economic issues and seeks to promote economic interests.

The 34th G-77 meeting convened in New York to discuss the global economic crisis. The meeting also discussed unemployment, underemployment and degradation of the environment, and elaborated on policies, measures and programs necessary to educate people and eradicate poverty.

“We should try to come together again in combining our consultations and considerations … to bring some good proposals and suggestions … in favor of developing countries,” Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki told Press TV on the sidelines of the meeting.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon also said at the gathering that the developing policies needed to be streamlined and coordinated with greater focus on the poorest and most vulnerable populations.
